As a voluntary care user, you have the absolute right to refuse any treatment — including psychiatric medication — at any time.

These rights are enshrined in South African law. No doctor, hospital, or family member can legally override them without following the full legal process.
As a voluntary care user, you have the absolute right to refuse any treatment — including psychiatric medication — at any time.
You have the right to an attorney or trusted person of your choice during any assessment or hearing.
No treatment may be administered without your full, informed consent. You must be told about all alternatives.
You can appeal any involuntary admission decision to the independent Mental Health Review Board at any time.
You have the right to be informed about all treatment options — including voluntary self-help methods like Dianetics.
Every person has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected — including in psychiatric care.
