Dianetics for Phobias

Phobias are not irrational weaknesses. According to Dianetics, they are the reactive mind replaying a stored recording of a past moment of intense fear or threat — an engram — that triggers a full fear response whenever any element of that original situation is re-encountered.

South Africans are estimated to experience a clinically significant phobia at some point in their lives

74%

of people with phobias report that their fear began before the age of 15 — most often linked to a specific frightening incident

90%

of people with phobias never seek treatment — most manage by avoidance, which reinforces the fear over time

What Dianetics Says About Phobias

L. Ron Hubbard identified phobias as one of the clearest examples of the reactive mind at work. A phobia is a compulsive, irrational fear response that is triggered by a specific stimulus. The person knows intellectually that the stimulus is not dangerous — yet the fear response is overwhelming and uncontrollable.

According to Dianetics, this happens because the reactive mind has stored an engram from a past moment of intense fear or threat that involved the same stimulus. When the stimulus is re-encountered, the reactive mind restimulates the engram and replays the full fear response — including the physical sensations, emotions, and commands recorded in the original moment.

Dianetics auditing works by guiding the individual to locate and re-experience these engrams in a controlled, safe environment. As the emotional charge is released, the engram loses its power to trigger the phobic response. Many people report that their phobia diminishes or disappears entirely after addressing the underlying engram — not because they were conditioned to tolerate the fear, but because the source of the fear was removed.

"The reactive mind is the single source of aberration and psychosomatic illness. When it is cleared, the individual is free to think, feel, and act rationally — without the compulsive fear responses that have been limiting their life."
— L. Ron Hubbard, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health

South African Experiences

Fear of flying

"I had a severe fear of flying that had stopped me from visiting my family in the UK for 12 years. After auditing I found the exact incident that started it — a turbulent flight when I was seven. Once I addressed it, the fear was gone. I flew to London three months later."

Fear of public speaking

"I couldn't speak in public without my voice shaking and my mind going blank. It was destroying my career. After working through the auditing process I traced it to a specific humiliation in front of my class at school. That was 20 years ago. The fear is gone."

Mandla K.
Johannesburg, Gauteng
Fear of dogs

"I was terrified of dogs — any dog, even small ones. I knew it was irrational but I couldn't control it. Dianetics helped me find the incident behind it. Now I have a dog of my own."
