Depression is not a character flaw. According to Dianetics, it is the reactive mind replaying stored pain — engrams — that suppress your natural vitality and joy. Understanding the source is the first step to addressing it.

L. Ron Hubbard identified two distinct parts of the human mind: the analytical mind — your rational, aware self — and the reactive mind, which records every moment of pain, unconsciousness, and emotional distress as an engram.
When the reactive mind is heavily charged with engrams related to loss, failure, abandonment, or hopelessness, it can suppress the analytical mind's natural optimism and creativity. The result is what many people experience as depression: a persistent, irrational low mood that does not respond to logic or positive thinking.
Dianetics auditing works by guiding the individual to locate and re-experience these engrams in a controlled, safe environment. As the emotional charge is released, the engram loses its power to suppress the analytical mind. Many people report that their mood lifts, their energy returns, and their sense of purpose is restored — not because they were told to feel better, but because the underlying cause was addressed.
"The goal of Dianetics is a new state of being — one in which the individual is free from the irrational compulsions and suppressions of the reactive mind, and able to think clearly and act rationally in pursuit of their own happiness."
These are common experiences that Dianetics addresses through auditing. This is not a diagnostic tool — if you are concerned about your mental health, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.
