Dianetics for Anxiety

Anxiety is not weakness. According to Dianetics, it is the reactive mind replaying stored recordings of past danger — engrams — that trigger fear responses even when you are safe. Understanding the source is the first step to addressing it.

What Dianetics Says About Anxiety

L. Ron Hubbard identified the reactive mind as the source of irrational fear. When you experience a moment of pain, danger, or unconsciousness, the reactive mind records every detail — sounds, smells, words, sensations — as an engram. Later, when any element of that recording is re-encountered, the reactive mind can restimulate the entire engram, triggering a fear response even though you are no longer in danger.

This is why anxiety can feel so irrational. You know logically that the situation is not dangerous, but your body reacts as though it is. The reactive mind is not under your conscious control — it operates below the level of awareness, which is why willpower and positive thinking alone rarely resolve deep-seated anxiety.

Dianetics auditing works by guiding the individual to locate and re-experience these engrams in a controlled, safe environment. As the emotional charge is released, the engram loses its power to trigger irrational fear. Many people report that their anxiety diminishes, their physical tension eases, and they regain a sense of calm and control — not because they were told to relax, but because the underlying recordings were addressed.

"The reactive mind is the single source of aberration and psychosomatic illness. When it is cleared, the individual is free to think, feel, and act rationally — without the compulsive fear responses that have been controlling them."
— L. Ron Hubbard, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health
