Everyone tells you to 'get over it,' but you can't. It's not weakness—it's engrams keeping the pain alive. Here's why.

Why You Can't Just 'Get Over It': Understanding Trauma Through Dianetics in South Africa

In the vibrant, often challenging landscape of South Africa, where resilience is a way of life, the phrase "just get over it" is heard far too often. Yet, for many, moving past deeply ingrained pain, anxiety, or the lingering effects of trauma feels impossible. This article explores why this common advice falls short, delving into the profound insights offered by Dianetics, the groundbreaking methodology developed by L. Ron Hubbard, to understand why willpower alone isn't enough to erase trauma, particularly within the unique context of South Africa.

The Invisible Scars: Trauma in Mzansi

South Africa, or Mzansi as it's affectionately known, is a nation of incredible spirit, but it also carries the weight of significant historical and contemporary stressors. From the lingering trauma of apartheid to the daily realities of crime stress, unemployment, and the infamous load shedding anxiety, many individuals grapple with experiences that leave invisible scars. These aren't just bad memories; they are deeply etched patterns that can influence behaviour, emotions, and even physical well-being. When someone says, "eish, I'm feeling deurmekaar today," it might be more than just a passing mood; it could be a manifestation of these deeper, unaddressed issues.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) consistently highlights the pervasive nature of mental health challenges across the country. While support groups and therapy play a crucial role, Dianetics offers a unique perspective on the underlying mechanisms of trauma and a precise path to address them, moving beyond mere coping strategies to actual resolution.

The Reactive Mind: The Hidden Adversary

Understanding the Two Parts of the Mind

To grasp why "getting over it" is so difficult, we must first understand L. Ron Hubbard's revolutionary discovery of the two parts of the mind:

  • The Analytical Mind: This is our conscious, aware mind. It thinks, observes, remembers, and resolves problems. It operates logically and rationally, helping us navigate daily life, from planning a braai to dealing with commuting stress in a busy taxi rank.
  • The Reactive Mind: This is the hidden, unconscious part of the mind. It operates on a purely stimulus-response basis, storing painful experiences and using them against us. It's the part that makes us react irrationally, even when our analytical mind knows better.

Imagine trying to navigate Jozi traffic when you're already stressed about load shedding and then suddenly, a taxi swerves, triggering a past traumatic experience. Your analytical mind might tell you to stay calm, but your reactive mind could flood you with fear or anger, making you feel completely deurmekaar.

Engrams: The Roots of Unwanted Reactions

What is an Engram?

The core of the reactive mind's power lies in what L. Ron Hubbard termed the engram. An engram is a mental image picture of a moment of pain and unconsciousness. These are stored in the reactive mind during times of physical pain, illness, or emotional trauma. Think of a child in a township, experiencing a moment of intense fear or physical injury while unconscious or semi-conscious. Every perception present during that moment – sights, sounds, smells, emotions, and physical sensations – is recorded in the engram.

The danger of engrams is that when similar circumstances are encountered later in life – a process called "restimulation" – the engram "turns on." The individual then re-experiences some or all of the pain, emotion, and sensations of the original traumatic incident, often without understanding why. This can lead to irrational behaviour, negative emotions, and even psychosomatic illnesses. For instance, the constant economic pressure in South Africa might restimulate engrams related to past financial hardship, leading to chronic anxiety or even physical ailments.

"An engram is a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception existing in a moment of partial or total unconsciousness."

Engrams are like hidden recordings in the reactive mind, waiting to be triggered.

The Limitations of Willpower and Conventional Approaches

When people tell you to "just get over it," they are essentially asking your analytical mind to override the reactive mind. But the reactive mind is not logical; it doesn't respond to reason or willpower. It's like trying to tell a computer virus to "just go away" – it requires a specific, targeted solution. This is why many South Africans, despite their incredible strength and the Ubuntu spirit of community, find themselves struggling with issues they intellectually know they should be able to overcome.

Traditional approaches often focus on managing symptoms or providing coping mechanisms. While these can offer temporary relief, they rarely address the underlying engrams that are causing the problem. It's like trying to fix a leaky roof by constantly mopping up the water inside, instead of repairing the hole itself. The water will keep coming.

Auditing: The Dianetics Solution

A Path to Erasing Engrams

The solution offered by Dianetics is called auditing. Auditing is the application of precise Dianetics techniques, performed by a trained auditor. An auditor helps another person, called a preclear, to locate and erase engrams from their reactive mind. This is not therapy in the conventional sense; it's a precise methodology designed to systematically address the source of irrational behaviour and unwanted sensations.

Auditing is done in pairs, with the auditor guiding the preclear through their reactive mind, revisiting past painful incidents in a controlled and safe environment. Through this process, the preclear gains an understanding of how these engrams have been affecting them and, crucially, discharges the pain and unconsciousness associated with them. This is how engrams are "erased," leading to lasting relief and a greater ability to function rationally.

Imagine a South African who has been struggling with anxiety due to past experiences of crime. Through auditing, they might revisit those moments, not to relive them traumatically, but to systematically process and neutralize the engrams. The goal is not to forget the experience, but to remove its irrational, debilitating hold.

The State of Clear: A New Beginning

The ultimate goal of Dianetics auditing is to reach the state of Clear. A Clear is a person who no longer has their own reactive mind. This means they are free from irrational impulses, psychosomatic illnesses, and negative emotions stemming from engrams. They are able to think more clearly, act more rationally, and experience life with greater vitality and joy. This is a state of being truly free, not just "getting over it," but having the underlying cause of the "it" removed.

For many in South Africa, achieving Clear could mean a profound shift – from being constantly on edge due to load shedding or crime, to being able to face challenges with a new level of calm and capability. It's about moving beyond merely surviving to truly thriving, embracing the spirit of Ubuntu with a mind unburdened by past trauma.
