When Emotions Feel Out of Control

Emotional instability — the experience of extreme mood swings, unpredictable emotional states, and the feeling that one's inner life is beyond one's control — is one of the most distressing conditions a person can experience. It affects relationships, work, and the basic sense of being able to trust oneself.

Many South Africans who experience significant mood swings and emotional instability are told they have a chemical imbalance or a mood disorder. While medical assessment is important for anyone experiencing significant mood disturbances, Dianetics offers an additional perspective: the reactive mind's role in creating and amplifying emotional instability.

The Reactive Mind and Emotional Tone

In Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard described a scale of emotional states — from the lowest levels of apathy and grief, through fear, anger, and antagonism, to the higher levels of interest, enthusiasm, and serenity. He called this the Tone Scale.

A person's chronic emotional tone — their habitual emotional state — is significantly influenced by the content of their reactive mind. Engrams recorded during painful experiences contain the emotional charge of those moments. When engrams are heavily loaded and frequently restimulated, a person may find themselves cycling through the emotional states contained in those engrams — experiencing sudden drops into grief, fear, or anger that seem to have no connection to present circumstances.

How Engrams Create Emotional Instability

Emotional instability in Dianetics is understood as the reactive mind cycling through the emotional content of multiple engrams in response to present-time triggers. A person may feel fine in the morning, then encounter a trigger — a tone of voice, a particular situation, a sensory cue — that restimulates an engram, producing a sudden emotional shift that feels overwhelming and inexplicable.

Because the reactive mind operates below conscious awareness, the person experiencing the mood shift often cannot identify what caused it. The emotion feels like it came from nowhere. This is the hallmark of reactive mind activity: emotional responses that are disproportionate to present circumstances and disconnected from conscious reasoning.

What Dianetics Offers

Dianetics does not diagnose or treat mood disorders. Anyone experiencing significant mood disturbances should consult a qualified medical professional. However, for those who want to understand and address the reactive mind's contribution to emotional instability, Dianetics offers a practical approach.

Through the auditing process, engrams that contain extreme emotional content can be located and erased. As the reactive mind's load of engrams decreases, the frequency and intensity of mood swings tends to diminish. The person becomes less reactive to triggers and more able to maintain a stable emotional state in the face of life's challenges.

The Tone Scale as a Navigation Tool

One of the most practical tools in Dianetics is the Tone Scale — a map of emotional states that allows a person to understand where they are emotionally and what direction movement is possible. Understanding the Tone Scale helps people recognise reactive emotional states for what they are, rather than identifying with them as permanent aspects of their personality.
